Textual analysis -->Music Magazine Double Page Spread

This is a double page spread taken from a music magazine of the Black Eyed Peas. This is a typical double page spread as there is a heading, the article and a photograph. In some ways this is not conventional. This is because there usually more then one image and important quotes in bold and larger making them stand out to the reader.

The photograph takes up three quarters of the page. The main colour scheme for the this double page spread is gold. This comes across through the image, as all members of the Black Eyed Peas are wearing an item of clothing that is gold.  Will.i.am stands out compared to the rest of the band members. This suggests that he he thinking of leaving the band, this idea also comes across through the heading “will he wont he?” Will.i.am is wearing the most gold out of the other members of the band. Some members look like they have been painted in gold.
The heading is in block capitals and is in gold and sliver. It grabs the readers attention as it is short. The heading is placed other the image and has a white background. Under the heading there is a paragraph. Just like the double page spread of Pink I think that this paragraph could be about the article. The article itself does not take up a lot of the page. The article takes up one quarter of the page which is the right hand column. There is one paragraph from the article that is in bold. This suggests to me that is an important paragraph. Where the heading starts there are two gold arrows this also follows the gold theme. I think that the gold colour scheme could represent money and wealth

Textual analysis --> Music Magazine Double Page Spread

This is a double page spread from a music magazine of Pink. This is a typical double page spread as it has a heading, photograph and article.

Just like the double page spread of Lily Allen, the photograph of Pink takes up half of the the page. Although this time the background is not white like the Lily Allen one. Another difference is that this image is a close up only showing Pink's face. Pink's blonde hair adds contrast to the image through colour as the background is black. There is also yellow dots of either side of Pink's face which add contrast. I think these yellow dots could be earrings as they are below her ears, another reason is that you can slightly see the wire of the earring. Pink is showing the audience that she is happy. The image is light although there is a black background this is because her make is not dark and heavy like Lily’s was. I also think that the photograph looks light because Pink is smiling which detracts your eyes from the dark background. In the bottom right hand side of the photograph there is some writing written in white so that is stands out.

This double page spread looks more provisional and formal then the previous one. This makes me think that this double page spread is from a more established music magazine then before. This could also be about the image they are trying to but across of Pink. Peoples first impressions of Pink is that she is a rebel, but I think is trying to put across that she is not a rebel but instead a respectable lady.

Unlike the article on Lily Allen. The heading is not large and in bold taking up half the page. Instead the heading is simple. The font nothing fancy but is a simple font that most computers have. This font is used throughout the article but in different sizes and in bold in some parts. Underneath the heading is a small paragraph, I think this paragraph tells the reader about the article.

This double page spread in some ways is not conventional. This is because usually double page spreads have more then one image. Another reason is because no important quotes have been taken out of the article and made larger.

Textual analysis --> Music Magazine Double Page Spread

This is a double page spread from a music magazine of Lily Allen. It is a typical double page spread with a heading, photograph and article.
The title looks like someone has cut out letters from a newspaper, it could be because Lily is in the newspapers quite often. It looks like newspaper clippings because it is in upper case and is white writing on a black background. Some of the letters look like they are lower case but they are just small capital letters. This is another reason why it looks like newspaper clippings.

Lily Allen is shown wearing a red check shirt which makes her look fashionable but like a normal person not a pop star that is followed by paparazzi. I think the idea was to show that she is your stereotypical artist instead it shows a down to earth person. The red stands out as the rest of the page is black and white. The red is also used in the caption before the article. Words that they wanted to stand out are in bold, twice the size and red, this draws your eye to them immediately. The photograph is large taking up half of the spread, this get the readers attention.

This double page spread is in some ways not conventional. Usually double page spreads have more then one image. They have the main image and a few sub-images. Another reason why it is an unconventional double page spread is because  there are no important quotes taken from the article and made larger.

Textual analysis ---> Music Magazine Contents page

This is a contents page taken from Drummer magazine. It is a typical contents page for a music magazine because it has images of bands and solo artists

In the top left hand corner is the heading “contents”. This tells the reader what page they are on. Above the word contents is a date. I think this date is the date the magazine was published. The date suggests to me that this magazine is published monthly as it is just the month and year in the date. The word Contents is  white text on a red background. This makes the heading stand out. The date is in a darker shade of red and therefore does not standout as much as the heading.

Underneath the contents heading is the word drummer. This suggests that just like NME, Drummer has to remind the reader what they are reading this is because Drummer is in capital letters and it is printed in a large font. Drummer needs to remind the reader more then NME as the font is about twice the size. Kerrang unlike Drummer does not need to but its name on the contents page this is because it is a well established magazine.

This contents page looks more like a typical music magazine then the previous magazines. This is because it has the headings “regulars” and “features” like most contents pages do. The section with the heading “features” is larger then  the “regulars” section. Features has red and black text on a white background while  the regulars has white and dark red text on a red background.

Although there is not a lot of images unlike the Kerrang contents page, Drummer has mainly got images then text on its contents page. The photographs are dark just like the Kerrang and NME. They all have a page reference except for the photograph of a drum kit. I think that this image is the logo of the magazine because it is a drum kit and it is near the heading “Drummer”. The central image is also the biggest on the page, this is to get the readers attention. I think that this image is central and biggest because it is the cover story. Another reason why I think this is because in white italic font is the word exclusive. The word exclusive is overlapping the article heading and the image. It links the two together, showing the reader the image and text along side one another. The page reference for the photographs is in the top left hand corner, these to follow the colour theme of white and red.

Textual analysis ---> Music Magazine Contents page

This is a content page taken from a NME magazine.
It is a typical contents page for a music magazine as it has a collection of images of bands and solo artist.
Unlike Kerrang Magazine this contents page does not have the heading contents instead it has the heading NME THIS WEEK. It suggests that NME have to remind the reader what magazine they are reading as NME are printed in a large font. Kerrang does not have to have its name on the contents page as big as NME does because it is a well established magazine.

This contents page is a conventional contents page. This is becuase contents pages usually  have a section with the headings "regulars" and  another heading "features" , this contents page is like this unlike the Kerrang contents page I looked at before. Although they dont have the headings "regulars" and "features" they have headings that are simular such as "reviews", "band index", "news" and "studio news".

The colour scheme of this contents page is green. This is unusual for a indie magazine as the colour scheme is usually dark colours like Kerrang's contents page. Thye contents page also uses the colours black and white for the headings. The headings have got white text onto a black background. The font throughout the contents page is the same althought there are differences through text size. The more important the heading the larger the font is.

Along the left hand side there is a heading "Band Index". This heading unlike the other headings is black font on a white background. There is then a list of different bands that are in this issue of NME magazine. The list of band names are in the colour red, this makes them stand out to the reader as the rest of the text is in black.

Just like the Kerrang magazine there is a subscription box in the bottom lefthand side. It has white and yellow font on a black background with an image of the magazine. The font that is in yellow I think is more importantthis is because it stand out more then the white font.

The format of this font is formal yet rebellion. This is because it is set out like a typical magazine but the font is at an angle giving it a edgey look. NME may of done this to show genre of the music the cover.

Magazine Front Cover –> draft one

5
This is my first daft of my music magazine “VERDICT”. I think for a first draft that it is a good attempt. It has the majority of the conventions of a music magazine front cover, such as a barcode, price, date and issue, masthead, sell line, main image and a cover line. The only conventions that are not on this front cover are sub-headings and sub-images. I like the brightness of the images as I think it makes the face stand out more. I like how there is a slight colour in the background as a pain white background would make me magazine look bland. For my next front cover I would improve on it my adding some sub-headings and images, make the cover line stand out more as it is a little difficult to read on the dark background of the artists leg.

Textual analysis ---> Music Magazine Contents page

This is a contents from Kerrang Magazine It is a typical contents page for a music magazine because it shows images of bands and solo artists.
In the top right hand corner is the "contents" heading. This shows the reader what page they are on. Under the "contents" heading  there is a quote from an article in the magazine. I think that this quote would be from the main article which would be seen on the front cover.
Along the right hand side there is a heading reading "this week".The headings use a similar style but are an other way round. The text of the heading "this week" is in black with a yellow background while the headings below are  in a yellow font with a black background. Under these are a list of articles with the number on the left of them.
In some ways this contents page is not a conventional contents page. This is because contents pages usually have a section with the heading "regulars" and another heading "features", this contents pages is not like that. It has a list of pages and images with page references along the side.
Most of the photographs have a main heading which is in bold making it stand out. They also have a caption underneath to let the reader what the image is about and a page number which lets the reader now what page they need to be on for that particular article. Although these images are not listed in the long list of pages on the right hand side.
The contents heading is larger then then the this week heading this is because this needs to stand out more. It follows the theme of the yellow and black for the text. The page reference for the images also follow this theme, with yellow text and black background.
In the top left hand corner there is a editors note about this issue of the magazine and the band featured. The same style of font is used through out the contents page, although the contents heading has lower case and upper case while the other headings are all in upper case.
In the bottom right hand corner there is a subscription advert for the magazine. This is red with white font which stands out compared to the rest of the text which is all yellow and black. I think that is done because Kerrang want people to subscribe to their magazine rather then someone else's magazine.
