Medium close up shots

What is a medium shot?

A medium shot is a shot half way betweaen a mid shot and a close up.

So what is a mid shot?

A mid shot shows some part of the subject in more detail whilst still giving an impression of the whole subject.

And what is a close up?

A close up shot is a certain feature or part of the subject takes up the whole frame.

So what does a medium close up shot look like?

Well below is some examples:

Conventions of a double page spread.

Heading:
The heading of a double page spread is alot larger then the article text and in bold which captures the readers eye. The heading on a double page spread is usually linked to the main cover story on the front cover.

Article:
The article is the most important part of a double page spread. The article tells the reader about the topic wrote about in the heading. The text of the article usually takes up the manjourty of the page along with important quotes in bold and images related to the story.

Images:
Images can always be found on double page spreads as they relate to the article. On the double page spread you can usually find one large image and a few collective images all in which are related to the article.

Page Numbers:
Page numbers are found on the bottom left or right of each page. They allow the reader to find the page they are trying to find and so that they know what page they are on.

Conventions of a contents page.

Headings:
These are important for contents pages as it puts all the articles under catorgories making it easier for the reader to find the page they are looking for.

Article names:
Article names are an important convention of a contents page as they tell the reader what is in the magazine. Without article names reading a magazine would be very difficult as you would not know if what you were reading.

Page Reference Numbers:
Page reference numbers are found next to the article names so that the reader know what page a particular article would be found on so that they can read it.  Page reference numbers make it quick and easy way to find the article rather then having to flick through the magazine looking for something interesting to read.

Images:
Images are used frequantly used on content pages as they can be linked to a page easily just by having a number the image is linked to in a corner. Images can add colour to a contents page and they usually follow the colour scheme of the front cover that the rest of the magazine will follow.

TOP OF THE POPS

More gossip ! More scandal ! More you !

Every issue is packed with amazing star gossip, plus hot fashion and beauty advice, sexy lads, and side-splitting cringes. Take a personality quiz to find out more about yourself, check your horoscope, sing along to our songwords, or simply pop an exclusive poster on your bedroom wall.

TOP OF THE POPS is a pop magazine which has a target audience of 10 year old girls onwards. This can be seen as it has pop artist such as the Spice Girls, Craig David, S Club 7 and Hear Say. It can also be seen because of the choice of colour scheme.

This issue of the TOP OF THE POPS magazine has Britney Spears as the main image and cover story. The image looks glamourous compared to the previous magazines I have anaylised as it is alot brighter and cleaner cut. Britney is wearing a purple one shoulder top which matches in with the colur scheme of he magazine of pink, red, white and purple giving the magazine a girly feel. Britney at time of this particular issue of TOP OF THE POPS was first issued was known as the pop princess. TOP OF THE POPS have used this and put the heading "Oh behave, Britney" which suggets that she know longer wants to be known as the pop princess.

The masthead and heading of the magazine like Mojo magazine is serif. Also both masthead and heading are block capital letters. The logo for the television program TOP OF THE POPS is used as the masthead of the magazine. The masthead is slightly different to the logo of the program as it has been made pink instead of being yellow. This makes it more appealing to its target audience of pre teenage girls. As the stero typical girl like the colour pink and everything girly such as doing each others make up and hair.

The importance of target audience?

What is a target audience?
A target audience is a group of people a product is aimed at. A target audience can be categorised as gender, age, class, occupation. For example Vogue has a target audience of young females upwards.

Why is a target audience important?
Having a target audience is an important part of media. Being able to pick the correct target audience for your product is a crucial job as it could make or break your product. If you choose the wrong target audience for your product it could cost the company you work for millions of pounds. Some times however the target audience can be a little difficult to decide depending on the product such as a mobile phone.

My chosen target audience

The chosen audience for my music magazine is going to be people who like a variety of music. The age group for my magazine would be 16 year olds to late 20s. I think my magazine will be mainly consumed by female readers.

Music Magazines Conventions

The image on a music magazine is either a singer or a band. Depending on the genre of the magazine depends on what singer or band they have on the front cover. You would not see some one like Brittney Spears on the front cover of a rock magazine like Kerrang. Some magazines like NME have new bands or singers on the cover to help them astablish themselves.

The title otherwise known as the masterhead is usually diplayed in in the top left corner of the magazine. This is because it can be seen clearly and because when we read we read left to right so it will be the first thing that the reader will see and therefore read. Each magzine has there own brand image this starts is clearly seen with the masterhead

Each music magazine has their own design for their name which makes the magazine instantly recognizable. The name is usually in bright colours to attract the audience and to draw theuir attention to the cover.

Every music magazine has a cover line on the front cover. This attracts the audience to the magazine and persuades them to buy the particular magazine. They have to be interesting and relevant to magazine as they have intise the reader to buy it. Cover lines are relevant to the magazines genre so that they are appropriate for the target audience. You would not see a pop star like Brittney Spears on the front cover of a heavy rock band like Kerrang

Each magazine also has a sell line which attracts the reader. The sell line relates to the genre and target audeince of a magazine by describing the magazine usually in a phrase contaning three words. An exmple of one is Kerrang's sell line which is 'Live, Life, Loud'. This describes what the magazine is about in as little as three words. Kerrang's sell line is correct for the genre it is aimed for as you would not listen to heavy metal music quietly, it is the type of music that needs to be listened to loudly, which the sell line indecates. Asell line shows the reader what the magazine is all about and therefore giving a chance to persuade the reader to buy their magazine.

The date and issue number are important part of a magazine. They can usually be found in two places; in the top left hand corner underneath the masthead and sell line or they can be found in the bottom right hand corner near the barcode. The date and issue number help the reader if they need to refer back to a past issue of the magazine, an exmaple of someone who may find this useful is a  magazine collector. the date can also help the reader so that they know what issue it is so that they dont buy it again. The date and issue number also help the publishers of the magazine. Some magazines are issued weelky or monthly.

The price is another important part of a magazine. It can be found on the same two places as the date and issue number can. The price is one of the most obvious things on a magazine, to tell you the price of the magazine. The price also indecates the target audience. If a magazine is really expensive and a good quality the target audience of that magazine will be the higher end of the class scale such as C+,B or A. If however a magazine is cheap or evan free it will be aimed at the lower end of the class scale such as E,D or C.

Textual Analysis -->Music Magazine Front Cover

Mojo Magazine

Let MOJO take you to the heart and soul of music with unique depth, insight and passion

MOJO magazine is designed for those who truly love music, every month MOJO provides you with music’s greatest icons in exclusive encounters, while celebrating tomorrow’s stars today. A hand-compiled collector’s CD is free with every issue, while MOJO magazine’s definitive reviews section provides you with the ultimate buyer’s guide. (link from greatmagazines.co.uk)

It is difficult to specify who the target audience is for Mojo just by the cover. I would say just by looking at the image that Mojo in my opinion has a indie feel with Oasis as the main image and cover story. I would also say that Mojo is aimed at an older audience then NME for example. This comes across because it has stars such as Bob Dylan and Bono, which are a genertion of stars that would not star in NME as they are not the stars of today.

Oasis is the main cover image for this particular issue of Mojo. This image looks more calm and relaxing compared to the Kerrang magazine I analysed in a previous post. This is becuase the image is not as dark as the one from Kerrang, although the image has the colour black surrounding it forming a ring around the boys. In the photograph of Oasis three of the band members can be clearly distingutied between while the other two on the end can not be seen as clearly as they are slightly burrled suggeting that they are not the most important members of the band. They are all wearing dark coloured clothers which makes their bodies merge into the black ring surrounding them.

The word oasis means paradise and I think that Mojo knowing this have played with the idea of paradise using the boys as an image of glamour. The reasons why I think they have played with this idea is because in comparasion to the black ring surrounding them they are in a clearing which suggets that we the audience are looking through a tunnel or key hole and see the thing we desire the most. The reason why I think that is beacuse above the heading Oasis there is a sub heading saying "You've got the band you always wanted.'

Both the masthead and the heading have seirf font meaning that unlike Kerrang who has jagged edges, Mojo is not breaking the mould as it has striaght edges. Both fonts are as equally big with a slight alteration in font style making Mojo stand out more then Oasis. This is beacuse Mojo is a white font based text on a black background with each character a capital and a soft edge casting a shadow. On the other hand Oasis is times new roman and is a gold font based text on a black background meaning it does not stand out as much. While all the characters are all captial again , the O of Oasis is larger then the other characters this gives the impression that they are all in lower case.

Textual Analysis --> Music Magazine Front Cover

Kerrang magazine
"Live life loud"

Kerrang magazine is the world's biggest selling rock magazine and covers all forms of music with attitude from Slipknot to Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit to The offspring and everything in between. ( link from Great magazines.co.uk)

Kerrang is a heavy metal music magazine. The target audience of such magazine is 15 to 30 year olds. It would also appeal to Emos, Goths and heavy metal fans, as they would be able to find out about the latest music thats coming out from their favourate bands, another reason is that they get to find out about up coming concerts.

Avenged Sevenfold is represented as a heavy metal band. The are all dressed in black with sunglasses on making them look threatening as you can not see there eyes. Another way they look threatening is because three members a visibly holding objects which can be seen as weapons such as a sword, stick and chain. One band member is standing in front of the other members this suggest that he is more important and that he is the lead singer. The facial expressions of the band members are sharp and harsh. We cannot tell if some the band members are looking straight at the camera because three of them are wearing sunglasses. The two members that are not wearing sunglasses are seen squinting at the camera almost a threatening look.

As well as the main image there are two sub-images. These images do not look as dark as the main image. The first sub-image of 'funeral for a friend' has white background giving it a cleaner cut then the other sub-image and the main image.I think that the photograph of 'Panic at the disco' looks more casual then the pother two images because the band members are wearing what seems to be their own clothes , also the photo looks as if it was taken in the local pub.

The masthead follows the image of aggression as it looks like it has been slashed with a knife. This effect is done by putting white lines through each letter. Also the masthead is sans serif which is a connation as it breaks the mould. It breaks the mould because the majourity of magazines the font has sharp edges while Kerrange's font does not have as much of a defined line. The colour scheme of the magazine uses blacks, reds, yellows and whites, this also follows the theme of violence as red and black are associated with anger and destruction.
The ideology of this particular Kerrang magazine is violence. This idea comes across through the text, images and colours. The main image has the words “sex, drugs, violence” printed on top as well the words “the worlds most dangerous band”. These phrases associate well with the ideology primarily because they have  the words “violence” and “dangerous” in them. The main image looks violent because it is dark and the band members are wearing sunglasses, covering their eyes and therefore adding  to the fear factor. Another reason why the image looks violence is because some members of the band are holding weapons. These give an impressions of gangs fighting.

The magazines sologan is "live, life, loud" which is correct for the genre of the magazine. The sologan is perfect for the genre of heavy metal because heavy metal and rock music cannot be listened to quitely.

LIIAR

To help me design my magazine I will be using the key media concepts. These key concepts are:

Language
Language used in the media could be through the ways of: sound, lighting, images, text, costumes

Institution
The brand or company of a product for example channel 4, BBC and ITV.
With a music magazine the institution could be NME or Kerrang

Ideology
A dominant set of ideas presenting itself as common sense of truth. Power relations are reinforced through ideology.

Audience
Who the product is aimed at.

Representation
How the product is represented. Does it look cheap or expensive? Does it want people to inspire to like the cover image if a magazine such as vogue

Monday 2 November 2009

Conventions of a magazine

Masthead:
The name of the magazine displayed in the typeface in which it is designed. This is the visual branding of the title and is usually done in a unique type face to be very recognizable.

Dateline:
Month and year of publication, often with the price. Note that a monthly magazine usually hits the news-stands the month before the cover date.

Main image:
When there is a single image on a magazine cover, it is used in a classic way. The face is big enough to make an impact on the news stand, the model making full eye-contact.

Cover lines:
Are usually distributed around the main image without detracting from it too much.

Main cover image:
This is very large - taking up about a quarter of the cover area - and comes in three layers, each with a different colour.

Left third:
In western countries, the left third of the cover is vital for selling the issue in shops were the magazine is not shown full frontage. The title must be easily recognizable in the display of dozens of competitors. The start of the masthead is important here.

Barcode:
Standard barcode used by retailers.

Selling line:
Short, sharp description of the title's main marketing point ('The world's No 1 for young women') or perhaps setting out its editorial philosophy.

The Brief

Main task:

The front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. all images and text used to be original produced by you minimum of four images.

Presentation of your work:
The presentation of the research planning and evaluation may take the form of any one or combination of two or more of the following:

  • a presentation using slideshows software such as PowerPoint.
  • a blog
  • a podcast

Evaluation

I am going to talk about how I felt the task in hand went and any difficulties I had if any encounted. We were asked to produce a school/college magazine using a blog to show the work we had done. This task would lead us up creating our very own music magazine. To beging with I researched different types of magazines, the convertions of a magazine, the importance of a target audience along with side examples of a medium close up shot. Once all my reseach had been done I had to do a mock up of what I wanted my cobver page and contents page to look like. I then took a some photos, one of which would be on my front cover. Once I had selected my image I used a photo editing software called Pisca 3.Using this software I edited my image my adding a masterhead, barcode, headings a date and issue number. The difficulties I encounted were the following:

  • The image I want to use frist of all was landsacpe and look strange when I rotated it.
  • The mise-en scene of my image is a clock, mirror and birthday cards which I dont think give of the right feel for my magazine.
I think that if I had prepared I little better and done more workl out side of college my college magazine would of been of a better quality.

Final Magazine

This is my final design for my magazine which I shall be handing in. I corrected my self from my previous posts which highlighted my spelling mistakes and the curreny. The spelling mistake was the spelling of beat which I had previous spelt with out the a meaning that my sentence did not make any sense. I managed to changed the currency simply by changing the font of my text.

Useful Links I have used.

These are the links I found to help me produce a contents page and a magazine front cover.

Wyke Magazine No.7

This is my seveth design. I happy to hand this in as my finnshed product. The only improvements I could think could be done to my magazine cover are the background behind my subject as you can see a mirror, clock and birthday cards. The other improvement that could be made is the currency as it is in dollars instead of pounds. The thrid improvement is that I have found a spelling mistake.

Wyke Magazine No.6

This is my sixth draft of my magazine. I am happy with the final product. In the post "Wyke Magazine No.5" I said that I was going to put the masterhead higher up unfortunaly this was difficult to as it is now saved on to the image therefore I left it to how it was. I like the space above the masterhead. I think it would of looked better without it but I dont think it makes a huge difference. I think that some of text colour is difficult to read due to the colouring.

Wyke Magazine No.5

This is my fith draft of my magazine. I have made the headings of the stories lower down. I think that the masterhead could be higherup and one of the headings needs to be more to the right. But apart from that I think it is looking good.

Wyke Magazine No.4

This is the forth draft of "Wyke XD". I feel alomst happy enough to hand this in as the finnished product. I still feel that the mise-en scene could have been improved. The headings for the stories I think are a little to high up. Another criticism that I have is that the currency is in dollers, this I feel could of been avoided, but the pound sign was not visable when I typed it.

Wyke Magazine No.3

This is my thrid draft of my magazine. This is the same image in the post labeled "Wyke Magazine No.2" I like this design because it is in colour and therefore stands out more then the other image. The mise-en scene of a mirror, clock and birthday card reck the feel for the magazine. However I think that I might use this image for my final design despite the downfall of the background.

Wyke Magazine No.2

This is the second draft of my magazine I did. I dont like this draft as I think the black and white effect does not work as well as I would of liked it to.I believe that it does not make the magazine stand out as much as I would hope. I do however like how the XD is the only part of the front cover in colour. Another reason why I did not end up using this design is because of the background my subject is standing infront of. The mise en scene of this image is not great because it has an edge of a mirror, clock and birthday cards.

Wyke Magazine No.1

This is how my first draft of my magazine looked like. I felt it was a good first try. However I think that the angle of the image gives the magazine a feel of printing erorr. I choose the barcode as it was made into an image which I felt made the front cover different.

Magazine contents page

This is a mock up of what I want my magazine contents page to look like. I aim to have about two to four images on my contents page to give the readers an idea what is install in the particular issue of the magazine. As well as images I will have numbers on the images so that the readers can flick through and see what it is about. I will also have the convetional list of pages under headings.

Magazine target audience

Usually the target audience for a school or college magazine is the teachers. I am however going to have my target audience as college pupils so to be more extact I would say that my target audience will be teenagers aged 16 to 18. My magazine will apeal to my target audience as I will be using bright colours and have images of the same aged group having fun at college.Another way my magazine will apeal to my target audience is because I will have stories in my magazine that they will find interesting such as party stories and have an agony aunite

Magazine cover templates

This is my mock up of my magazine front cover. I have dicided on the title for my magazine to be Wyke XD. I have placed my title (masterhead) at the top of my magazine as it is a conventional part of a magazine also because it graps the readers attendion straight away. The colour of my masterhead is going to be a dark purple. I have chosen this colour because it will out from image it is placed apoun. I have also chosen the particular shade of purple as it fits in the theme of my college magazine name. The Wyke logo is in purple so I thought that I would carry this theme on so that my target audience will be able to asscoite with the magazine straight away. The background image of my magazine will be on the the following:

A person leaning on a wall looking up as if in a thinking pose.
A person looking at a piece of work
A person sat working their work
Someone dressed in a holloween costume
Someone sat happily enjoying themselves

The barcode will placed at the bottom right of my magazine as it will be out of the way so therefore it will not be the first thing the reader will see. Above the barcode I will put the website address for the magazine which is http://www.wykemag.co.uk/ . Along side of the barcode I will put the price. Underneath the masthead I will put the date and issue of my magazine.

College Magazine name ideas

  • Campus Comfort
  • College Life
  • Wyke College
  • Collage - brighting up your college life
  • Wyke
  • W
The college name that I am going to use on my magazine is Wyke. I choose this name because my magazine is going to be about Wyke and the people who go there. The colour of the font will be just like the logo for Wyke, a nice deep purple.

What I need to do

Orgainisation of models, locations customes or props

Work on layouts drafting mood boards spider diagreams

Evidence of time management.

How are differnet magazines portrayed

Differnet types of magazines ar portrayed in different ways.

Fashion Magazines
Fashion mags are normally portayed to be classy and desrible. They usually have a glamourous image on the front cover of either a celebrity or a model. Fashion magazines have a glossy feel to them compared to other magazines.

Gossip Magazines
Gossip mags are portayed the same as a fashion magazine. As well as having images of celebrities and models the also include gossip stoires about celebrities and audience stories some stories include "My husband left me for another lady"

Sport Magazines
Sport mags are portayed to look fast and engeretic and can make you start doing a sport. Sport magazines are one of few mags aimed at the male popultaion.

Game Magazines
Game magazines are the other type of magazines aimed mainly at the male population. They usually have bold print, bright colours and hightech graphic images.

School/College Magazines
School /college magaziones are not as brightly colured as the other types of magazines I named above. They are usually not as exciting as other mags and can be aimed at either the teachers or pupils. School/college magazines are usually however aimed at teachers rather then pupils though there are some indepent schools that aims there school mag at the pupils

Conventions of a contents page

Page numbers are used on a contents page so people know what page different topics/stories are on.

Headings are used on the contents page so people can find out what is on what page allowing them to go to that page number straight away without searchnig through the whole magazine.

Images are used to catch peoples attention and so you can relate the pictures to the headings.

Welcome notes are also used on a contents page because it is used to make the reader feel welcome therefore making them want to read on through the magazine.

Subscription notifications are used to attract more customers to buying the magazine.

Conventions of a typical school or college magazine

For a school magazine, a photo it one of the main conventions as it suggests what is going to be in the magazine which will more than likely be backedup by the title. Pictures are useful because they catch people's attention as well as making the magazine look more colourful and interesting.

The heading is used to tell us who the magazine's wanted target audience is for example: 'Secondary Teachers' is obviously aimed at teachers and wouldn't attract a teenager to go out and buy it.
http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/teachers

Sub headings are used on magazine's to tell anyone that buys it what else is in the magazine and not just the main topic. The bright colours and bold fonts are also another way of attracting people and getting them to buy the magazine.

The date is used to tell us what issue the magazine is and when it was bought out.

The Brief

Preliminary exercise :
Using dtp and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, feraturing a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriatley laid out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of dtp.

  • a blog
  • a podcast
